1 Bowl Set and Forget Rolled Oats

1 Bowl, No Mess, Real Porridge
The weather is finally cooling down in Australia, where we live. Don't ask me why it has taken until the middle of Winter before the weather starts to actually represent Winter, but there it is.
For our first food blog post, I wanted to share my favourite way of making one of the most popular, frugal and healthy (depending on the toppings), breakfasts- the humble bowl of porridge (oatmeal).
I know it's boring, and as soon as it is Summer again, people will be back to their smoothies and overnight oats. However I am personally a big believer that Winter requires warmer food. It is better for digestion and it just warms your soul!

What I do hate, however about porridge is the mess! Make it in a pan, you have to clean up the pan. Use quick oats- I'm sorry but that's just gross. Make it quickly in the microwave- It blows up all over the microwave.
Porridge Volcanoes Suck!! And I know that you are supposed to stir it every 30 seconds and it only takes a couple of minutes, but I swear that I have done it that way and it still produced volcanoes!!!
But because of my humble dedication to eating well and not having to clean up, I came across another method (and I do not remember how I came across it) that changed my life! Not life changing like going to an Oprah Winfrey show, but not far from it!
The secret you ask? Microwave your rolled oats on the "defrost by weight" setting on your microwave!!! Now this method will always be individual, so you will have to do a bit of fiddling in order to get it to your personal preference, however this is the method that I like.
The basic ingredients to the perfect porridge are:
- 1/2 cup rolled oats (not instant oats- trust me on this one)
- 1/3 cup water
- 1/3 cup milk (full cream or dairy free, but don't use low fat as it will make it more watery)
- Dash of salt
- Sweetener or toppings of choice
You may wonder why I choose to cook my oats for longer than some are prepared to wait for breakfast- the answer is simple- I am not cooking them!
It's not like you are waiting around for toast to pop so that you can butter it, or as though you are having to stir your porridge- you literally dump everything in a bowl and dump that bowl in the microwave- no stirring, no volcanoes. Use this time to go and get ready. Have your oat toppings ready and enjoy a hassle free, frugal breakfast that is simple and healthy.
